Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • nourishes kidney Yin
  • nourishes liver Yin and blood
  • clears heat from deficiency
  • drains fire from Yin deficiency flaring upwards

Description:

A mixture with roots in the 16th century, it is a basic formula for clearing empty heat or fire that rises upwards and causes symptoms such as tidal heat – hot flushes and sweating, especially in the afternoon and evening (or at night), "five hearts" heat – on the chest, palms and soles of the feet, thirst, dry mouth and dry mucous membranes. The heat also disturbs the heart, which manifests as palpitations and, on a psychological level, inner restlessness to anxiety and insomnia. You have surely already recognised perimenopausal symptoms in this, but it is also used in the treatment of hypertension (which often appears during this period), hyperthyroidism or rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used in the treatment of urination problems or back pain that correspond to kidney Yin deficiency with empty heat. How does it arise? By the way we live, we gradually "live out" our life essence, exhausting kidney Yin. There is less that moistens, cools and nourishes. Therefore, Yang energy begins to relatively prevail in the organism. And that is precisely "empty" heat – heat from Yin deficiency. This is why relative overheating and drying of the organism occurs.

The mixture is a variant of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan – Six-Ingredient Pill, a basic formula for replenishing kidney and liver Yin, which is extended by Anemarrhena and Phellodendron. Together, they can clear empty heat and "top up the water". Thus, we replenish and cool simultaneously.

Indications:

  • hot flushes and sweating associated with menopause
  • emotional lability and irritability
  • night sweats
  • drying of mucous membranes
  • feeling of thirst (especially in the evening)
  • slightly red cheeks
  • reddening of the eyes
  • tinnitus
  • feeling of increased temperature
  • heat of the five hearts (soles, palms and on the chest)
  • feeling of "hot bones"
  • restlessness
  • insomnia
  • distraction, mental ungroundedness
  • frequent erotic dreams in men, "wet" dreams
  • increased sexual desire

Modern use:

  • hypertension – high blood pressure
  • hyperthyroidism
  • nephrotic syndrome
  • nocturnal emissions in men
  • menstrual cycle disorders
  • fertility problems
  • osteoporosis

Tongue:

  • red
  • thin
  • without coating or with a small amount of dry coating

Pulse:

  • shu
  • xi (rapid, fine)
  • possibly fu (superficial) in the proximal position

Contraindications:

  • contraindicated in people with Yang deficiency
  • use with caution in patients with spleen deficiency and digestive problems, especially when they have a greasy white coating on the tongue

Note:

Because "there is a narrow path leading to the kidneys", replenishing them takes time. You should feel better within weeks, but months are needed to "balance" Yin and Yang in the kidneys.
