As we age, the tendency for blockages in our body increases. Vital substances are depleted, organs are weakened, metabolism is less efficient, and phlegm is formed. The combination of these factors also causes undernourishment of the Emperor – the heart, which is responsible for our Shen spirit – personality, perception, understanding, and memory. Imagine that it has little energy, is languishing, and on top of that, it cannot see through the windows through which it looks and perceives the world. It is hindered by various types of blockages, most notably phlegm. In its final stage, these tendencies manifest as Alzheimer's disease or senile dementia. In patients with Alzheimer's, there is a problem with short-term memory at the beginning of the disease, then with long-term memory, and finally, only the subconscious part of the mind functions.
The formula calms the Emperor by providing energy and nourishment (Qi and blood), herbs that transform and drain phlegm and open the "clear orifices" – the senses and speech clear the windows (the famous combination of Acorus, Polygala, and Curcuma together with the "two aged ones" – Tangerine and Pinellia) and herbs that move Qi and blood add dynamics to it and restore the proper circulation of vital substances.
And the confused grandfather will get his memories back again…
