A very complex formula useful for both acute and chronic conditions caused by a pathogen of a hot nature associated with a cough.
It can be used in the initial phase of a wind-heat attack (for example, with rapidly spreading viral infections in spring and autumn), especially when associated with a sore throat and voice problems, up to the point of voice loss. When we have failed to stop the penetration of the pathogen "on the surface" and it has reached the lungs, the formula very effectively clears heat from the lungs and prevents the formation of fire toxins, which can manifest as pneumonia or the formation of a lung abscess. This is also greatly aided by its ability to clear hot phlegm, which manifests as coughing up yellow to green phlegm. Significantly, it does this without drying out the lungs. On the contrary, it contains herbs that moisten the lungs and prevent them from being dried out by the present heat.
She Mu Tang is also very useful for the recovery of cough and vocal cords after acute upper respiratory tract diseases, as it restores the proper mechanism of Qi at the lung level and clears residual heat and phlegm. For this reason, it can be advantageously used in the treatment of chronic cough and voice problems in smokers.
Although the formula moistens the lungs and stops cough by transforming phlegm and adjusting lung functions, it does not contain tonifying herbs. In the case of a prolonged cough, it is therefore possible that it will also be necessary to strengthen Qi and Yin in the area of the upper burner.
