Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • benefits the kidneys, nourishes their yin and essence
  • nourishes liver yin and blood
  • cools heat from deficiency
  • supports sexual functions
  • maintains normal blood sugar levels

Description:

An original classic formula dating back to the beginning of the 12th century AD, when it was compiled as a paediatric formula to treat the so-called "five delays" in infants and toddlers – delayed standing, walking, hair or tooth growth, and speech. Since the Ming Dynasty (14th – 17th century AD), it has been used as a basic formula for yin deficiency (that which nourishes, moistens and cools – manifesting as night sweats, feelings of heat that worsen in the evening, dryness in the mouth and throat) in all major organs, but primarily in the kidneys and liver. Modern use also includes kidney yin deficiency leading to infertility, sexual dysfunction in both men and women, chronic nephritis and hepatitis (inflammation of the kidneys and liver), or diabetes. According to Chinese medicine, this is considered a yin deficiency in the so-called three burners; the formula primarily addresses the lower burner, but because the kidneys are the most important yin organ (90% yin), and thus support yin in all other organs, it has a very wide range of uses. It is also well known for its use in cases of dryness of the mucous membranes (e.g., eyes, throat, vagina). As an excellent yin tonic, it is also used to normalise elevated cortisol levels in chronic stress, anxiety states, "internal tension" and insomnia.

The "six tastes" mentioned in the name represent three draining herbs, which help to drain excessive dampness, empty and full heat, and three replenishing herbs. Rehmannia, called "black essence" precisely because of its extraordinary function of replenishing life essence, yin and blood, is the basic herb of the mixture. Cornus retains what we replenish in the right place and further increases yin, essence, and also clears empty heat from insufficient nourishment and cooling. Chinese yam replenishes Qi at the level of both the kidneys and the spleen – so that the latter can handle such a large proportion of "heavy" herbs.

Because the mixture replenishes our life essence so well, it is used as a basic mixture against the signs of ageing and as a foundation for other anti-ageing mixtures.
