The name of the formula itself describes its function – 8 herbs for "correcting" damp-heat in the area of the lower burner, mainly the urinary bladder. This can arise from various causes. A saying from the famous physician Sun Si-Miao states – when the kidneys are in deficiency, the urinary bladder generates heat. The primary cause is therefore kidney deficiency, very often specifically their yang – when cystitis arises, for example, after catching a cold, due to a deficiency of defensive energy. Another possible cause is a weakened spleen function, where dampness is created in the middle burner (for example, from unsuitable food) – which then falls downwards due to its heavy nature. There it stagnates and turns into damp-heat. Emotions that generate heat can, of course, also contribute to this. The condition manifests primarily as pain and burning during urination, frequent and/or difficult urination with a small amount of dark, cloudy, or bloody urine. In modern medicine, this can correspond not only to cystitis but also to nephritis, glomerulonephritis, or prostatitis.
It is therefore an acute formula of the 1st choice for treating urinary bladder infections and is also effective in the initial stage of nephritis or prostatitis. The herbs in it enter directly into the kidney and urinary bladder meridians. It has a strong clearing effect on heat, damp-heat, and also on fire from bacterial toxins. This includes herbs such as Dianthus, Polygonum, Gardenia, Rhubarb, and also Talcum. Plantago and Juncus help with the proper movement of water. Urination is eased and pain is calmed.
This is truly an acute formula that is not used preventively and should not be used long-term either – cold herbs can injure Qi and yang. If there is no relief within 36 hours, visit a doctor – it is time for antibiotics or chemotherapeutics.
