It is a perennial climbing orchid that reaches a length of several metres. Its home is in Mexico, and the Aztecs used it to flavour their chocolate. It reached Europe thanks to the discovery of America. Today, vanilla is grown on Reunion, the Malagasy Republic, Mauritius, Ceylon, Tahiti, the Bahamas, Java and in West Africa.

Along with saffron, it is one of the most delicate spices. It is used mainly in confectionery and the production of liqueurs.

It is of a neutral nature and sweet taste, it nourishes and moisturises.
