Salvia hispanica is grown in the mountainous regions of Central America for its seeds, chia seeds. The plant was known to the ancient Aztecs, who used them as currency. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, folic acid and a high amount of antioxidants.

It is excellent not only in the kitchen but also in cosmetics. It is suitable for weight loss and slows down the digestion of polysaccharides, making it beneficial for diabetics.

It has a sweet taste and a neutral to warm nature.
