Moutan Cortex – root bark

Nature:

  • slightly cold (cold, balanced, yang in yin non-toxic, toxic, light)

Taste:

  • bitter, pungent (sour, sweet, dense)

Tropism:

  • heart, liver and kidneys (pericardium, crouched heat in the blood layer)

Direction of action:

  • inwards

Effects:

  • clears heat

  • cools the blood
  • invigorates the blood

Dosage:

  • 3 – 12 g, standard 10 g

Contraindications:

  • blood deficiency and deficiency cold, excessive menstruation, bleeding during pregnancy
